event. Minnesota Twins win their
home opener 8-1 against the California Angels at Metropolitan
Stadium in
Bloomington, MN. Ken Landreaux begins a club record 31 game
hitting
streak the next day. Landreaux breaks up Bruce Kison’s
no hit bid in 9th
inning to start his streak. Twins record 77-84.
July
7, 1980 -Mark works first event at Met Sports Center
in Bloomington,
MN. Larry Holmes retains his WBC Heavyweight title by knocking
out Scott
LeDoux in the 7th round.
August
9, 1980 – Vikings beat San Diego
Chargers 27-17 in preseason opener
at Met Stadium. Vikes beat Atlanta 24-23 on September 7th in
regular
season opener on way to NFC Central Division title.
May
1981 - Minnesota North Stars face the New York Islanders
in the
Stanley Cup Finals to conclude Mark’s rookie season at
the Met Sports
Center. The Islanders win the series four games to one. Butch
Goring wins
Conn Smythe Trophy as the MVP of the Stanley Cup playoffs.
This is the
Islanders second of four consecutive Stanley Cup championships.
North
Stars first appearance in Stanley Cup Finals. Finish regular
season with
35-28-17 record. Bobby Smith leads team in scoring.
October
1987 World Series - first ever World Series games
held indoors.
Minnesota Twins win their first ever World Series championship.
Twins
defeat the St. Louis Cardinals in seven games becoming the
first team ever
to win four home games in a World Series. Frank Viola wins
games one and
seven and is named MVP of the series.
1994-Present - Cactus League Spring Training games. Works
at HoHoKam
Park in Mesa (home of the Chicago Cubs) since 1996. Also has
worked at
Scottsdale Stadium (home of the San Francisco Giants) since
2002 and
Phoenix Municipal Stadium (home of the Oakland A’s) since
1997. The
renovated Scottsdale Stadium opened in 1992. The Orioles, Red
Sox, Cubs
and A’s played in Scottsdale Stadium before the Giants.
April
1996 – Oakland A’s play their
first six home games of season in Las
Vegas. The first major league games played in a minor league
park since
September 3, 1957. The A’s played these games in Las
Vegas because
renovations at the Oakland Coliseum were not completed on time.
The A’s
finished with a 78-84 record.
January
1997 - Green Bay Packers beat the New England Patriots
35-21 in
Super Bowl XXXI at the Louisiana Superdome in New Orleans.
Desmond Howard
is the first special teams player to be named MVP in a Super
Bowl. Howard
has a Super Bowl record 99-yard kickoff return for a TD. Green
Bay wins
their first Super Bowl in 29 years. This is the Packers 12th
NFL
championship.
September
21, 1997 – Green Bay Packers
beat the Minnesota Vikings 38-32 at
Lambeau Field in Green Bay, WI. The highest scoring game in
Packers-Vikings history. The Packers win their second consecutive
NFC
title. They lose Super Bowl XXXII to the Denver Broncos 31-24.
The
Vikings reach playoffs for the fifth time in six years under
Dennis Green
and finally win a playoff game under Green when they beat the
NewYork
Giants in a wildcard game. They lost to San Francisco in the
divisional
playoffs.
1998-2000 - NASCAR at Phoenix International Raceway Rusty
Wallace wins the
first ever rain shortened race at the track in 1998; Jeff Gordon
wins the
first ever NASCAR Busch series race at Phoenix International
Raceway in
1999; Jeff Burton wins Checker Auto Parts 500 NASCAR Winston
Cup series
race at PIR in 2000; Rusty Wallace records fastest lap of 26.83
seconds in
track history on November 3, 2000. The one-mile track opened
in 1964.
NASCAR racing came to PIR in 1988.
February
3, 2002 - New England Patriots upset the St. Louis
Rams 20-17
in Super Bowl XXXVI at the Louisiana Superdome in New Orleans.
The
Patriots win their first Super Bowl title. Adam Vinatieri kicks
a 48-yard
field goal as time expired to win the game. QB Tom Brady is
named MVP.
April
2, 2002 – Arizona Diamondbacks
home opener against the San Diego
Padres at Bank One Ballpark in Phoenix. The Diamondbacks receive
their
World Series rings. The Padres first game without future Hall
of Famer
Tony Gwynn who retired after the 2001 season. D-Backs win their
second
consecutive NL West title. D-backs finish 98-64 in the regular
season.
Randy Johnson wins his 4th consecutive Cy Young Award and 5th
of his
career. Randy Johnson and Curt Schilling win 20 games and record
300
strikeouts during the season. Johnson leads the NL in wins
(24) ERA
(2.32) and strikeouts (334). The Diamondbacks beat the Padres
a franchise
record nine times at BOB during 2002 season. The Diamondbacks
get swept
by St. Louis in three games in the NL Division Series.
April
12, 2002 – Minnesota Twins home
opener against the Detroit Tigers at
the HHH Metrodome in Minneapolis. Twins win the game and their
first ever
American League Central Division title. The Twins beat the
Oakland A’s
three games to two in the AL Division Series. The Twins lose
to the
Anaheim Angels in the American League Championship Series four
games to
one. Twins finish regular season with a 94-67 record. Tigers
finish
55-106.
Summer
2002 – Angels-Dodgers interleague
series at Edison International
Field in Anaheim, CA. Angels get the wildcard berth in American
League
with a 99-63 record. The Angels beat the Yankees in AL Division
Series
before beating the Twins in ALCS and advancing to their first
World
Series. Angels beat the San Francisco Giants in seven games
to win their
first championship. Dodgers finish 92-70.
September
2002 – Dodgers-Giants series
at Dodger Stadium in Los Angeles.
The Giants finish 95-66 and earn the wildcard berth in the
National
League. Giants beat Atlanta and St. Louis in postseason to
win the
National League pennant for the first time since 1989. They
lose in the
World Series to the Anaheim Angels in seven games.
December
15, 2002 San Francisco 49ers-Green Bay Packers game
at
Candlestick Park in San Francisco The Packers win 20-14 in
inclement
weather. Ahman Green goes over 1000 yards rushing and Donald
Driver
surpasses 1000 yards receiving for the season in this game.
Packers and
49ers both win division titles. Packers lose to Atlanta in
a wildcard
game and SF loses to Tampa Bay in divisional playoffs after
beating the
Giants in wildcard game.
May
2003 – NHL Western Conference Finals
between the Minnesota Wild and
Anaheim Mighty Ducks at the Xcel Energy Center in St. Paul,
MN. Anaheim
wins game one 1-0 in three overtimes at the X on their way
to a four-game
sweep. Anaheim shuts out the Wild 2-0 in game two at the X.
The Wild
scores only one goal in the series. Anaheim reaches the Stanley
Cup
finals for the first time in franchise history. They lose to
the New
Jersey Devils in seven games in the finals.
February
8, 2004 – The 54th NHL All-Star
Game at the Xcel Energy Center in
St. Paul. The first NHL All-Star Game in Minnesota since 1972.
Joe
Sakic scores three goals for the Western Conference and his
named the MVP.
He is the 14th player to record a hat trick in an All-Star game. The
Western Conference loses to the Eastern Conference 6-4 despite Sakic’s
big
game. Mark Messier broke an NHL All-Star Game record when he recorded his
14th assist in All-Star Games.
